When an emergency happens and there are no local resources, Caritas launches a global appeal. Our members raise funds in their own countries and offer human resources, all of which are directed through the national Caritas office on the ground.

The sitution in Darfur remains very serious, with 2.7 million people displaced from their homes, according to the UN’s
estimate, and more than 4 million people directly affected by the conflict, both in Darfur and Chad.Caritas Internationalis and Action for Churches Together have launched a 2009 emergency appeal for US$10 million to help over a quarter of a million people who have been forced from their homes in Darfur. EA34 Flood in Mauritania

Up to 23,800 people will receive Caritas help for ten months following floods in Mauritania. The US$378.634 (256.492 euro) programme will provide water and essential items such as mosquito nets and blankets, it will give support to farmers and promote income generating projects.




EA33 Flood in Benin

Following heavy flooding in Benin, Caritas is appealing for US$240,000 (162.712 euro) to help 200 families rebuild their houses. The six-month project will also support 1200 children in their schooling and provide 400 farmers with seeds.




EA32 Bhutanese refugees in Nepal

Caritas is appealing for US $307,626.62 (208,568.73 euro) for a one-year emergency programme to provide educational support to over 1800 children of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal.

Caritas India will support 35.000 families in 711 villages from 9 of the affected districts in the States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, with the following activities distribution of water, halogen tablets, soap, food, kitchen utensils, mosquito nets, clothes and blankets. EA23/2009 Cambodia
Caritas will provide a one month food ration to 13,000 people as well as other relief items. Caritas Cambodia will provide 10 mobile clinics with sufficient drug supply for the affected people. Caritas is appealing for US$ 371,085 (EUR 277,551).


EA22/2009 Philippines
Following Typhoon Ketsana,  Caritas has launched an appeal for US$ 980,216.29 (Euros 666,813.80) to provide food, medicine, shelter materials and other aid items for 50,000 of the worst affected people for a month.


EA21/2009 Niger
Caritas Niger has appealed for US$900,000 (EUR 600,000 euro) to provide help to households affected by flooding. Caritas aims to help 9000 people in Agadez and Tillabéry.
 


EA20/2009 Burkina Faso
Caritas in Burkina Faso has launched an emergency appeal for US $770,779.63 (EUR 520,000) following floods which hit the capital Ouagadougou recently and other areas such as the city of Kaya. Caritas aims to help 20,500 people by providing food, water, toiletries and health care. Read more...

Caritas Senegal has launched an initial appeal of US $ 71,133.25 (EUR 48,000) to provide 2000 people affected by floods with food and hygiene kits for two months. Caritas would also give them tools to help people to start to farm again.

Somaliland Drought EA 07

For Somaliland, the estimated rural population in ‘Acute Food and Livelihood Crisis’ is 45,000. The urban poor continue to struggle with hyperinflation, with 30,000 people in ‘Humanitarian Emergency’ and 110,000 more in ‘Acute Food and Livelihood Crisis’. Caritas is appealing for US $413, 216 (EUR 317,859) to provide 3,000 residents in 17 target locations benefit directly, another 3000 indirectly from improved water facilities, among them at least 25% displaced people, either conflict or drought affected.


Sri Lanka War Victims EA 06

Caritas is appealing for US $ 2,366,000 (EUR 1,811,728) to help victims of Sri Lanka’s war in the North and East with food for 10,000 newly displaced people, medical assistance to 1,270 patients, construct 840 family shelters and three temporary shelters, and support 2500 school children to receive an education.




Costa Rica Earthquake Recovery EA 05

Caritas is launching an appeal for US $ 815,010 to help 1300 people with recovery and reconstruction programmes that include housing, legal aid, and community support. The 6.2 Richter Scale earthquake hit 9 January and  affected over 120,000 people.
